Men’s Discernment Group Meets with Archbishop Listecki
On Friday, March 4th, our Sacred Heart of Jesus Discernment Group had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Archbishop Listecki and share in the Eucharist at the Mass offered by our spiritual father, our own archbishop.
As is usual, the group began by praying Evening Prayer together, followed by a light dinner. Archbishop Listecki then joined the group and had the chance to get to know some of the young men discerning their call as well as the chance to speak to them and answer some of their questions.
Archbishop Listecki used the gospel story of the rich young man to illustrate an important point about discerning one’s vocation. In the story Jesus tells the young man that the first thing he must do is to keep the commandments. That is the call of all of us, whether thinking about the priesthood or not. But the one who is discerning a call to the priesthood asks the next question that the young man asks Our Lord, “I have done all of these things, what must I do next?” That’s the question that is at the heart of discerning a vocation – “what must I do next?” What is next is always a willingness to let go of oneself more and more completely, as Christ tells the rich young man.
At the heart of the priestly vocation is a willingness to let go of oneself in order to serve Christ and His Church by being specifically consecrated to the priesthood of Jesus Christ Himself.
Eight discerners and three priests spent a weekend together at St. Francis de Sales Seminary for the annual Wisconsin Men’s Retreat. Archbishop Listecki opened the retreat with Mass, a fish fry, and a dialogue about being open to God’s will.
One participant, Patrick Behling of Holy Family Parish in Whitefish Bay, wrote the following comment in a thank you note to the Vocations Office:
"It was a great blessing to be able to pray alongside other men also discerning a vocation to the priesthood during the Wisconsin Catholic Men's Retreat. Together, we encountered Christ in the Liturgy of the Hours, Lectio Divina (Praying with Holy Scripture), Eucharistic Adoration and, above all, the Holy Mass. We shared our individual stories of wrestling with our vocations, and we drew solace and strength from one another and from the Lord. I am so grateful for the chance to pray alongside my brother discerners and to know that I am not alone in my discernment. Thank you so much for providing this retreat for us."
December 2010's Remnant Football Weekend a Great SuCcess!
Over the weekend of December 10-12, 2010, the Cousins Center saw a unique event take place as area high school football players united in their faith came together at the Remnant: Gridiron Spirituality for the Catholic Man. The weekend's focus was spirituality and sport, geared particularly to high school students. These players came from a variety of schools, both Catholic and public, including: Brookfield Academy, Waukesha West High School, St. Augustine Academy, Marquette University High School and Slinger High School. They were joined by former players, college and NFL, as well as by priests and chaplains. The Remnant was hosted by seminarians from St. Francis de Sales Seminary, and sponsored by the vocations department of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Read More...
