Deacon Alex Nwosu
Parish: St. Agnes, Butler
Seminary: Saint Francis de Sales
Birthday: October 5
Intercessor: St. John Paul II and St. John Vianney
I was born in the Anambra State of Nigeria. I'm from a Catholic family of five siblings (four boys and a girl). I also went to minor and major seminary before I started travelling around the globe.
Tell us your vocation story:
I have struggled many years outside of the seminary with a void, a longing, a certain unexplainable emptiness that often comes back with a recurring longing to surrender. I have struggled like Jonah, wrestled like Jacob and grumbled like Jeremiah. I have always come back to a place of surrender. I think that everything that has happened in my life seemed to have been a preparation for this moment of surrendering. I see priesthood as a life of total dedication to service of God and humanity. My desire for preisthood was a fire that the Lord enkindled in my heart early in my life. 'The Lord of the harvest' took me through a 'vocation detour,' through events, experiences, religious communities and jobs outside the seminary walls and traveling to many countries. However, with each passing day the fire outside the seminary walls, while traveling to many distant countries, kept burning with greater intensity in my heart. In the Lord's time, He set me properly en route. Many years later, here I am today celebrating the joy of being a seminarian; it is so great a privilege to be one of the few chosen. I will trust that the Lord will perfect what He has started in my life.
What is the greatest challenge facing a man considering the seminary?
The greatness challenge is what I call, 'the fear of the unknown,' or the challenge of what the future holds.
What is your favorite psalm verse and why?
"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23) This bible verse reminds me of the faithfulness, the mercy and the love of God. It reminds me also to show the same to others.
What are your favorite activities outside of the seminary?
For hobbies, I like watching soccar, visiting friends, working and taking care of plants.
Where do you like to go pray?
I like to pray before the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel at St. Francis de Sales Seminary.
Where do you do your best studying?
I do my best studying at the library.
Which saint should people ask to intercede for your vocation?
St. John Paul II and St. John Vianney
