I never thought about priesthood until college when the Lord put a profound image in my mind during prayer, and I immediately felt that the Lord might be calling me to be a priest. I briefly discerned the priesthood, however, I unfortunately never fully understood what it meant to discern, and I never talked to anyone about it. I had always deeply desired to have a family, and felt that was my calling. After college, I pursued my career in business and also stayed active in my faith as a youth minister and catechist. That said, I always felt that something was missing and I knew there was a deep longing in me to a deeper call. This longing persisted and I went on a solo backpacking trip to the Smoky Mountains to clear my head and spend some time soul-searching. During the trip, I did the Novena of Surrender and through the novena I realized how many of my life decisions were based in fear and not what I actually wanted to be doing. On the drive back home, the Lord planted the seed once again of the priesthood. I brought it up to my spiritual director and he invited me to spend a weekend at the seminary on a “Come and See.” During that weekend, I felt a peace that I hadn’t felt in a while and knew that God was asking me to apply.
Getting over the idea that you will know for certain whether God is calling you to be a priest before you’re willing to entertain the idea of entering seminary. This is especially true when a man starts to consider what he may be giving up by entering such as a college, a great career, family life, etc. In seminary, God continues to make His will known, and God will always bless those who are pursuing His will. He is never outdone in generosity.
Psalm 46:10
In a culture where human-doers are celebrated more than human beings, this verse is a great reminder that ultimately, the more we surrender our work to God, the more fruitful our endeavors will be. God is in control, not us.
Staying active by playing sports, working on my car and motorcycle, and enjoying the outdoors. Above all, I love to spend time with my family and friends.
